    Carin Kuoni

    Profile

Carin Kuoni is a curator, writer, and arts administrator whose work examines how contemporary artistic practices reflect and inform social, political, and cultural conditions. She is director/chief curator of the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School. Prior to her appointment at The New School, she directed the exhibition program at Independent Curators International (ICI) and was director of The Swiss Institute, New York.

As a founding member of the artist collective REPOhistory (1989-2000), as researcher and curator of numerous interdisciplinary exhibitions, conferences and fellowship initiatives, she seeks, examines and supports counter positions to hegemonic narratives. Her exhibitions have addressed issues such as contemporary Native American identity and 19th-century settler colonial portraiture (Red River Crossings, Swiss Institute); participatory processes and democracy (OURS: Democracy in the Age of Branding, Parsons School of Design); artistic and social networks (The Grand Tour, Swiss Institute; #searchunderoccupy, Parsons); new notions of transient and temporary spaces (Thin Skin, ICI traveling exhibition); or agency (The Puppet Show, ICA Philadelphia et al; Post-Speculation, P!, New York). She is the editor or co-editor of numerous exhibition catalogues as well as several anthologies with a particular focus on curatorial ethics and politically engaged art practices, most recently Assuming Boycott: Resistance, Agency, and Cultural Production (New York: OR Books|Vera List Center for Art and Politics, 2017).
