Screenwriting (Minor)

Overview

The minor in Screenwriting is homed at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. This minor is designed to train students in the challenging field of creating stories for the screen (film, TV, web, etc.). Students learn to write feature-length screenplays, both comedic and dramatic teleplays, and explore specialized areas while learning the fundamentals of character, conflict, and scene structure.

Course availability may vary from semester to semester. Some courses may be in development and offered at a later time. Students seeking to pursue alternative coursework to fulfill the minor should consult with their advisors.

Learning Outcomes

By the successful completion of this minor a student should be able to demonstrate:

  • Comprehension of the elements of screenwriting, story structure, and the techniques essential for writing in a variety of narrative media: feature-length narrative screenplay, TV shows, webseries and new media
  • The ability to use those elements and techniques in practice to begin, complete, and rewrite a full-length screenplay for at least one medium
  • Refined critical skills and the language with which to assess and discuss elements of scripting
  • The ability to apply critical tools of analysis to consider and offer constructive feedback on a peer's creative work-in-progress
  • Proficiency in the use of technical screenwriting terminology and formatting
  • Understanding of best practices for presenting screenplays in a professional context

Eligibility

Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all courses taken for the minor. Those students who maintain a grade of B or better in all of their required courses will also be eligible for a Certificate in Screenwriting.
