Soul-Folk
Ashawnta Jackson, Schools of Public Engagement '15
Folk music of the 1960s and 1970s was a genre that was always shifting and expanding yet never found room for some communities. Through soul-folk, Black artists like Terry Callier and Linda Lewis reclaimed their space in the genre, using it to bring their own traditions - jazz, blues, field hollers, spirituals - to light to create something wholly new, wholly theirs, wholly ours.
This book traces the growing influence of soul-folk and its evolution from folk tradition to subgenre. Along the way, it explores the musicians, albums, and histories that made soul-folk what it is.
