Founded in 1964, the Center for New York City Affairs was the first teaching and research center in the United States devoted to the study of a single metropolitan area. In 1971, the center launched the Graduate Department of Urban Affairs and Policy
Analysis—one of the first policy programs in the United States. The department became part of the new Graduate School of Management and Urban Professions, later renamed the Milano School for Policy, Management, and Environment.
The Milano curriculum has always nurtured creative thinking designed to promote social, economic, and political change. Its graduates lead organizations, programs, and policymaking entities in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The Milano approach
also lives on in research centers, including the Center for New York City Affairs and the Tishman Environment and Design Center,
that foster cross-disciplinary learning and make an impact around the world through innovation in economics and social systems.
Today our Milano School programs join other renowned graduate programs at The New School for Social Research and Parsons School of Design.
