Leaders in the Nonprofit Sector
Milano's program in Nonprofit Management was one of the first in the United States and for more than three decades has led the development of model research and curricula used at leading academic institutions worldwide.
Milano prepares students to assume positions of leadership in nonprofit organizations. The program combines theory and practical skills within a framework reflecting both individual and social justice values. Students are given direct exposure to nonprofit organizations through client projects. These elements are important to professional education in any field, but they are of special significance in nonprofit management.
The Nonprofit Management Curriculum
The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills needed for effective management and leadership within the global nonprofit sector. To that end, the curriculum consists of three components through which students fulfill the degree requirement of 42 credit hours:
Core Courses
Economics for Management and Public Policy
Quantitative Methods
Program Core Courses
Making a Difference: Perspectives on Global, Organizational, and Individual Social Change
Theory and Practice of Nonprofit Management
Management and Organizational Behavior
Fundraising and Development
Financial Management in Nonprofit Organizations
Advanced Seminar in Nonprofit Management
Electives
The third group of courses in the master's program consists of six elective courses that you choose in consultation with your academic advisor. You may use your electives to enlarge your general knowledge of nonprofit management or to develop an area of specialization within nonprofit management. This flexibility is made possible by the wide array of courses offered by the Nonprofit Management program and other programs at Milano and the other divisions of the university.
Additional Requirements
Full-time students with little or no relevant experience must undertake a professional internship (minimum of 400 hours). Internships allow Milano students to sharpen their abilities and build confidence through intensive involvement with professionals in actual work settings. Recognizing the importance of understanding the global environment, Milano has an international requirement, which can be fulfilled through coursework or international fieldwork.
Certificate Programs
Milano offers Post-Master's Professional Certificates that allow students to continue their professional studies or pursue a new area of interest. These certificates are intended for students with master's degrees who wish to acquire additional knowledge and receive recognition of advanced proficiency. Students enrolled in relevant master’s degree programs at The New School may concurrently pursue a certificate.
