David Lehman was educated at Columbia University and spent two years in England as a Kellett Fellow at Cambridge University. He has written 14 books and edited numerous others. He wrote a poem a day for five years and published his results in two volumes, The Evening Sun (2002) and The Daily Mirror (2000). Dr. Lehman edited The Oxford Book of American Poetry (Oxford University Press, 2006), a comprehensive anthology of American poetry from its beginnings to the present, as well as Great American Prose Poems (2003) and The Best American Erotic Poems (2008). In 2010, he won ASCAP's Deems Taylor Award for A Fine Romance.

He initiated the Best American Poetry series in 1988 and is editor in chief of its website and blog. His essays, which range in subject from great poems to the fate of an analog art in a digital age, have appeared in recent issues of the New York Times Book Review and the Wall Street Journal. Dr. Lehman won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1989 and has been honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Library of Congress. He has reviewed books for Newsweek, People, and other magazines and has lectured on American poetry, music, and film in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Dr. Lehman lives in New York City.
