In The New School's interdisciplinary Global Studies program, you critically investigate complex global processes and issues, including migration and mobility, environmental injustice, economic inequality, and social movements. You learn to think across disciplines and contribute creative solutions - locally and globally - for bringing about a more equitable world.
Global Studies students critically examine power structures and analyze pressing issues, introducing them to contexts and causal dynamics that help them develop innovative responses to current issues. Experiential learning is an integral part of Global Studies, and you have opportunities to apply your knowledge through practice-based courses, internships, volunteer work, and fieldwork in New York City and abroad. In the classroom, you also have space to collectively reflect on this form of engagement, to make connections between the conceptual and the concrete, and raise critical questions that emerge from these encounters.
The program places particular emphasis on engaged learning, directed research, and courses that capitalize on the university's academic expertise in social sciences, foreign languages, writing, media studies, design, management, environmental studies, and urban policy.

We are in the midst of an exciting redesign of this curriculum that addresses the urgent challenges of our time, building new programs and majors that respond to changes in the world and tap into The New School’s unique strengths and groundbreaking work. Students who begin their studies at Lang in fall 2026 or after can take courses in this subject and pursue it further through minors, electives, or broader individualized study. While it offers the atmosphere and intimacy of a small college, Eugene Lang College is part of The New School, a major progressive university in New York City. Both in New York and in cities around the world, Global Studies students have opportunities to apply classroom knowledge to real-world settings through internship, volunteer, and fieldwork experiences.
In learning to transform your ideals into action at the global level, you prepare for global careers in the non-profit sector, public service, international organizations, global media, development, research organizations, education, and law, as well as graduate study in the social sciences. Global Studies alumni have given TED talks, testified at government hearings, produced podcasts, held exhibitions, taught, inspired, listened, and above all worked responsibly towards a more ethical and just world.
Global Studies is part of The New School's suite of cross-college, interdisciplinary undergraduate programs, which includes Global Studies, Environmental Studies, and Urban Studies. These interdisciplinary programs are designed to prepare students for the new careers of the 21st century.

As a Lang Social Science Fellow, Merriman conducted interviews at the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and with Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees to develop her paper, "The Path to Work Authorization: Violence, Livelihood, and Care for Asylum Seeking Women in New York City.”
