Neil Greenberg is a choreographer, dancer, curator, and educator. His choreographic project can be seen as an investigation of meaning-making in dance, and the particular kinds of meaning that dance can provide—sensual, perceptual, ontological. As a choreographer he is known especially for his 1994 Not-About-AIDS-Dance, which employs his signature use of projected words as an alternative text to the onstage dance action and as a layering strategy that complicates the performance moment while also opening doors for the viewer into the more abstract potencies in the dancing. He is a former dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and has taught choreographic workshops based on Cunningham’s use of chance mechanisms. He is currently completing Reading Merce Cunningham Queerly, an article that employs optics from queer studies to approach Cunningham’s life and work. From 1995-1999 he served as Dance Curator at The Kitchen, the interdisciplinary NYC performance space. He has frequently served on grants panels, serving as chair the New York State Council on the Arts dance panel in 1999. He has also conducted extensive study and research of innovative somatic approaches to movement—such as Body/Mind Centering, Laban Fundamentals, Klein Technique, and Alexander Technique.
