In a grove not far from a village whose people toil and slowly starve, the crows are holding a meeting about their future. The flock is uneasy; the king must produce an heir this breeding season, and it is of the utmost importance that they create a new crown for him to wear on his head.
The Crow King himself is reluctant and would rather not take over after his father. The Old Crow is tired of the monarchy and wants nothing more than to abolish it. The Hooded Crow dreams of being free. Down in the village, the wood pigeon wanders around, eats fruit, and is content to avoid duties and the other pigeons’ noisy chatter. The wolves run aimlessly toward better lands in a forest with no end. Somewhere in the distance, a circus moves slowly toward an unclear destination.
