Latinas in Public Relations: Shaping Communications, Communities, and Culture

Carmen Boon, The School of Media Studies '01

This anthology is published by Fig Factor Media, an international multicultural media company devoted to honoring diverse authors and narratives. The first book of its kind, Latinas in Public Relations showcases the experiences of 15 Latina professionals from across the country working in PR, communications, marketing, and public affairs. The book has been financially supported and promoted by its authors.

Latinas in Public Relations offers reflections from professionals who, through commitment, resilience, and perseverance, have left a mark on their industries. The women share challenges, moments of courage, thoughts on their heritage, and advice for succeeding in competitive industries. The essays include valuable tips for navigating unpredictable and challenging environments and practical advice for the new generation.

The book offers readers the opportunity to hear directly from women who are among the few Latinas in this profession: A recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that only about 12 percent of the country’s public relations and communications practitioners identify as Hispanic or Latino; of that number, only about 7.5 percent identify as Latina. The book also serves as a professional development tool for Latina high school and college students as well as young professionals who aspire to become the next PR and communications leaders.
