(Updated October 27, 1 PM, EST)

    Important Ebola Update

On October 24, 2014, the first case of Ebola virus was confirmed in New York City. The patient is a physician who recently returned from Guinea, where he had been working to combat the spread of Ebola and treat those infected with the virus.

New York City has been diligently planning for this eventuality as well as our hospitals, emergency medical first responders, and our healthcare professionals, including Student Health Services. The doctor is currently being treated at Bellevue Hospital by one of the best health care teams in the finest public hospital in the world.

Student Health Services would like to reassure the New School community that Ebola is not easily or casually transmitted. The virus must be contracted through contact with the bodily fluids of an infected individual who is already displaying symptoms. The risk to New School students remains minimal.

At this time, we should all remain calm and stay informed. As Student Health Services continues to follow the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the small number of cases in the U.S. and New York City, updated information will be posted on the Student Health Services website and on MyNewSchool. Additional communication may also be sent to the community through email.

    Who to contact

If you or someone you know has been traveling in the affected areas of West Africa or has been in contact with someone diagnosed with Ebola, please contact Student Health Services by phone at 212.229.1671.

For more information about Ebola, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. Also, please feel free to call us if you have any questions or concerns you would like to discuss. We are here to help.
