Guidance. Support. Advocacy.

Advisement is a valued and integral component of the Lang experience. As academic advisors, we are here to provide you with academic guidance and administrative support throughout your education. In addition to guiding you through course registration each semester, we can advise you about academic resources and extracurricular programs available at Lang, with particular emphasis on the integration of academic and experiential opportunities (such as study abroadprofessional internships, and volunteer service). We also help students access valuable services throughout the university, including the Writing Center and Career Development. And we advocate on your behalf to ensure problems are resolved and you can participate in relevant opportunities and programs. We are available to respond to the concerns you have about undergraduate life here, as well as help you achieve your academic goals.

A Developmental Approach. Other institutions have a prescriptive approach to advisement, where conversations focus merely on the completion of general education requirements. At Lang, we have a more developmental approach to the relationship between students and advisors. For example, we often recommend you explore new intellectual territories, and pursue a broad education in the liberal arts. You have the opportunity to investigate academic disciplines previously unavailable to you. Through intensive seminars, you are routinely confronted with other student perspectives; and you must develop the analytical skills to formulate a thoughtful response. The seminar approach to learning encourages you to defend your perspectives, refine and reinforce your beliefs, while remaining engaged in dialogue. Your opinions matter in seminar discussions, however dissident or controversial.

The Importance of Advisors. At Lang, students often have more academic freedom in their intellectual pursuits than at other institutions. This freedom reinforces of the importance of your advisement. We have an academic advisor designated for each undergraduate class (including transfer students). We invite you to schedule an appointment with your advisor, and visit the homepage for your class.

In addition to your assigned class advisor, a faculty advisor provides academic guidance and mentorship as you make important educational decisions, including how to create breadth and balance in your course selections and class schedules. We encourage you to reach out to your faculty advisor during registration to discuss more than just prospective courses. The faculty advisors are available to discuss your future, including relevant career fields and graduate programs.

The Perspective of a Peer. As a freshman, you also have the benefit of a peer advisor, called a seminar fellow. The seminar fellows are upper-level students with demonstrated leadership, trained to teach a workshop for first-year students. All freshmen register in this workshop (worth 2 credits) which is designed to furnish new students with important skills and resource information. The seminar fellows are available throughout your first semester of enrollment to facilitate your transition to Lang.

The professional staff from the Academic Advising Office is available to you throughout your undergraduate career.  Appointments for students are available Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Fridays, 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. You can also take advantage of our resource library to research study abroad programs, graduate schools, and national scholarships.

For all questions and concerns, please feel free to contact the Academic Advising Office at 64 West 11th Street, by telephone at 212.229.5100 x2264, or via email at langadvising@newschool.edu.
