Maya Ciarrocchi’s video installations address the individual’s cultural identity and how environment shapes this. One of the structures she employs for doing this is through the historic tension between landscape and portraiture. She updates these conventions through the use of video, but embraces them by positioning the camera as a silent witness. In this way, Ciarrocchi is able to re-contextualize political and cultural issues that are part of public discourse but frequently distant from common experience.
