Profile:
Ioanna Theocharopoulou teaches history and theory classes of Interior Design with an emphasis on the social and cultural dimensions of the interior, as well as electives on the history / theory of sustainable design. Her most recent research focuses on issues of urbanization and sustainability. Before coming to Parsons she taught at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University, where she initiated and co-curated a series of public events about issues of sustainability in architectural design, ECOGRAM: The Sustainability Question (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011). She has taken part in numerous academic conferences, most recently “Theatrum Mundi, The Global Street,” at Columbia University, and “Debating Design and Innovation in Times of Crisis” at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University where she discussed her work on urbanization and informal settlements. Theocharopoulou recently hosted pioneering environmental thinker and activist Michael Braungart at Parsons, in collabotation with the Goethe Institut, New York, For the last four semesters, she has co-curated a series of public talks called INSIDE (hi)STORIES, that explore the intellectual framework for the study of Interiors, in collaboration with professor Sarah Lichtman.

Helped edit journal WORK, Volumes 4 and 5 with Johanne Woodcock, Director, AAS Interior Design.

Currently working on a book manuscript concerning postwar urbanization, and a collection of essays based on the ECOGRAM lectures and events.
