The history of economic thought

William Milberg’s research is in two distinct areas of economics.  The first is the consequences of economic globalization for income distribution and economic insecurity.  Milberg studies how the globalization of production (expanded trade and investment) has impacted profits, wages, investment, financialization and economic growth.  His recent research focuses on the U.S. experience, but he has done considerable comparative analysis across OECD countries.  The emphasis on global value chains has led to a series of studies of the distribution of value added within developing countries as a result of the corporate strategy shift towards globalized production among lead, developed country firms.

The second area of research in the history and methodology of economics.  Milberg studies the role of pragmatism in 20th and 21st century American economic thought and how this tradition has influenced scientfici methods in economics.
