    Profile

Jessie Cox is a composer, drummer, and scholar, currently in pursuit of his Doctorate Degree at Columbia University.

Known for his works’ commitment to experimentalism and Afrofuturism, his music steps into the unknown, and has been referred to by the New Yorker as an example of “dynamic pointillism,” a nebulous and ever-expanding sound world that includes “breathy instrumental noises, mournfully wailing glissandi, and climactic stampedes of frantic figuration.” His work has been performed, and he has performed with, ensembles such as the LA Phil, Ensemble Modern, the Sun Ra Arkestra, JACK Quartet, and International Contemporary Ensemble, at festivals and venues all over the world, from Maerz Musik, Opera Omaha, to Luzern Festival.

His scholarly writing has been published in liquid blackness published by Duke University Press, Critical Studies in Improvisation, American Music Review, Sound American, amongst others.
