    Annie Beliveau

    Profile

Annie Beliveau is a vocalist, composer, and music theorist who specializes in choral music with a particular interest in Bulgarian singing and its interactions with the “world music” genre. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Music Theory at the CUNY Graduate Center and recently presented “Haunting the Cutscene: Bulgarian Choral Music in Video Games at the Turn of the Millennium” at the virtual conference of the Student Scientific and Creative Society of the Ukrainian National Music Academy. A passionate teacher, she especially enjoys teaching theory, composition, and ear training in classical and popular styles.

Annie is an avid performer of early and contemporary vocal music, especially in consort and chamber arrangements, and she records and performs professionally with Choral Chameleon; the Schola Cantorum of the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer; and Yasna Voices, the New York Bulgarian Women’s Choir. “Praznuvame Zora,” her first composition for Yasna Voices, has been performed at Barnard College, the Zlatne Uste Golden Festival, the Bulgarian Consulate, and other venues in New York City. Others of her compositions have been performed along the East Coast of the U.S. and internationally in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

While earning her undergraduate degree in Music from Middlebury College in her home state of Vermont, she spent nine months researching medieval plainsong in manuscript witnesses at the Bodleian Library of Oxford University. This research culminated in a senior project incorporating theory, composition, and performance. Her interdisciplinary approach continues in projects such as her 2020 lecture-recital for the Sacred Music Concert Series of Columbia University.
