Profile
Shawn Larson is the Chief Credit Officer and Managing Director of Community Development Banking at JPMorgan Chase Bank. His team is responsible for underwriting over $4 Billion in construction financing nationally each year. His areas of expertise include complex finance structures utilizing Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), Historic Tax Credits (HTC), New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC), and lending to Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). His team also manages a $12 Billion portfolio of projects in various stages of construction and permanent stabilization.
Prior to entering banking Shawn was a volunteer in the Peace Corps (Armenia); but built his foundation in affordable housing finance by working as a project manager at the New York City Dept of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). Shawn is particularly proud of the time he spent at HPD, because of the strong dedication and passion of the professionals he worked with and their commitment to creating housing equity throughout the five boroughs.
Shawn teaches the real estate class from the perspective of someone who, like himself when he entered the field, has limited or no previous experience in finance. His goal is to provide the student with the fundamental skills of development and finance so they can better understand the built environment that surrounds them. And to connect the dots between how policy decisions to develop much needed affordable housing are practically implemented using a broad set of financial tools (though the class focuses on affordable housing development, Shawn frequently draws comparisons and dives into market rate development as well). He believes this knowledge is helpful not only to those who want to enter the field of finance, but to those interested in urban policy, government, nonprofit organizations, or social activism.
