    Profile

Mia Charlene White is Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies in the Urban & Environmental Studies Program at the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts (formerly Schools of Public Engagement), with a co-teaching appointment at the Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment, at Parsons’ School of Design Strategies. She has a bachelor's degree in Anthropology and Political Science from the State University of NY at Stonybrook, a Master of International Affairs (Environmental Policy) from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), and a Ph.D in Urban Studies and Planning from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Course 11)). Mia’s in-progress manuscript on community land trusts and reparations contributes to the literature on blues epistemology and reparative planning as theories of spatial belonging that build a language for future-building at the intersection of racial, climate, and housing justice. Her interdisciplinary service to the profession includes election as Vice-Chair of the Black Geographies Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG), a 3-year Track Chair appointment for Planning History & Theory, for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), and an appointment on the NJ Reparations Council’s Environmental Justice Committee. Mia’s teaching has been recognized with a university-wide award for student-centered universal course design. She is a Mellon Faculty Mentor (and former Mellon Faculty Fellow); is currently a Faculty Fellow with the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy, and serves as Associate Director of the Tishman Environment and Design Center
