For my concept I am exploring two minorities who both existed in Ireland a century apart. The first focuses on ‘The Galway Shawl’ more specifically, the ‘Black Shawlies”, a group of women in 19th century Galway Ireland. Although wearing the traditional Galway Shawl which was common at the time in Galway, those who wore it in the colour black historically carried a negative connotation due to social class based prejudices and were subsequently labeled ‘black shawlies.’<br />I am intertwining this tradition with sports wear inspired by ‘the pony kids’, a book by Perry Ogden which depicts young Irish travellers in the late 90s. The young traveller children were ridiculed and seen as outcasts to society. and the kids were nicknamed the ‘Urban cowboys.’ My collection focuses on an amalgamation of these two groups who share in common the misfortune of being socially outcast because of their traditions and connoted class.
