Murad Aliyev

I am a multidisciplinary artist from Baku, Azerbaijan, and now based in Paris. My work explores the way we experience time or, more specifically, the contrast between structured, mechanical time and the more fluid, intuitive ways in which we live and perceive time. My thesis project, Post-Continuum, is a video installation that examines this tension. Inspired by both French theorist Guy Debord’s critique of capitalism and its control over time and French philosopher Henri Bergson’s idea of duration, I wanted to challenge the way we perceive and relate to time in modern life. The piece uses the spontaneously flowing medium of watercolor as a visual metaphor. By slowing down and speeding up the footage, I disrupt linear time and invite viewers to feel time as something dynamic and alive. Post-Continuum is about breaking away from rigid systems of control and exploring time as an experience that unfolds in a personal way. It also plays with the ideas of prediction and freedom, asking whether we are truly in control of time or simply moving through it.
