Adamantia Selekou

I am an artist from Athens, Greece, and now based in Paris. In my work, I often explore memory and presence, using familiar forms as a way to tell personal stories. My thesis project, Constellation of Freckles, uses the café chair as a kind of portrait. I was drawn to the familiarity of the chair, which reminded me that a simple object can hold traces of the people who have sat in it and the moments that have passed there. The work is made up of a video portrait and a physical portrait. In the video, I sit on a café chair in a public space; the physical portrait, presented in a gallery, consists of the unoccupied chair, engraved with symbols of intimate memories. The chair represents my presence, a memory made visible. The figure is absent, but the presence remains as an imprint of my life. For me, the chair becomes more than furniture. It becomes a container for memory, a way to make the invisible visible.
