Bachelor of Music in Composition

The four-year undergraduate Composition BM program offers cutting-edge classical music instruction while providing a foundation of high-level technical training.

It prepares students to write music for real-world opportunities in a variety of settings: concerts, theater and film, and more.

Program Details

Over the course of the four-year program, students complete coursework in the following areas of study. Please see the academic catalog for the current detailed program curriculum.

  • Private study
  • Techniques of Music (music theory, ear training, dictation, piano)
  • Major coursework and electives
  • Guided electives (courses in arranging, orchestration, entrepreneurship, improvisation, pedagogy, technology)
  • Liberal arts courses (musicology, electives at The New School)

Performing Arts Core

Students also engage in a series of cross-disciplinary courses through the Performing Arts Core program, which includes a combination of required and elective courses that all undergraduate students at the College of Performing Arts participate in. These courses explore subjects including improvisation and collaboration, the whole human artist, socially engaged artistry, and technology and experimentation.
