General Degree Requirements

Through the Adult Bachelor’s Program The New School awards Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Fine Arts (for graduates of the Integrated Program of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy) degrees to students who successfully complete 120 credits of study as described below. Up to 84 credits may be transferred toward degree requirements. 

Below are the general requirements for each degree type in the Adult Bachelor’s Program. All students should consult with their advisor each semester to ensure they are on track to graduate. 

  • Bachelor of Arts students must complete at least 90 liberal arts credits and not more than 30 credits in non–liberal arts courses (defined as studio and practice-based courses and internships).

  • Bachelor of Science students must complete at least 60 liberal arts credits and not more than 60 credits in non–liberal arts courses.

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts students in Musical Theatre must complete at least 48 liberal arts credits and not more than 72 non–liberal arts courses. (The BFA Musical Theatre program is only for graduates of the AMDA Integrated program.)

  • All students must complete the Shared Capacities requirement (consult your advisor).
