    Profile

Robert Dunn is an award-winning writer, teacher, musician, and photographer. His fiction has been published widely, including in The Atlantic, Redbook, Omni, and the O. Henry Prize story collection, as well as numerous literary journals. He’s also published poetry in The New Yorker and a front-page essay in the New York Times Book Review.

His first job was at The New Yorker magazine, and later he taught at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. For the last years of the writer Bernard Malamud’s life, Dunn was his personal assistant. He also worked on the editorial side of Sports Illustrated magazine, and currently is an Associate Professor in the Writing Program at The New School University in New York City.

Novels by Robert Dunn include The Sting Rays (1998), Pink Cadillac (2001, chosen as a Book Sense pick), Cutting Time: a Novel of the Blues (2003), Soul Cavalcade (2005), Meet the Annas (2007), Look at Flower (2011), Stations of the Cross (2013), and Savage Joy (2017).

As a musician, Dunn is the founder of the musical group Thin Wild Mercury (thinwildmercury.com), as well as its guitar player and principal songwriter. The group is on hiatus, but in the past they’ve played often around New York City, including regularly at Arlene’s Grocery and CBGB’s Gallery.

In the last decade, Dunn has returned to photography. He has had work exhibited at the International Center of Photography, and his photobooks (OWS, Angel Parade, Meeting Robert Frank, New York Street, and A Carnival of Souls) are in the permanent libraries of the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, and the New York Public Library. In 2017, Dunn taught the first course in photobooks as literature at The New School University.

Dunn is married to a set designer/film art director and lives in New York City and Woodstock, N.Y
