Advising

Advising is essential to helping students in the Adult Bachelor’s Program attain their professional and personal goals. Program advising is a team approach provided by Core Faculty Advisors, a select group of faculty with broad knowledge of The New School and the liberal arts, and Student Success academic advisors, who are knowledgeable about degree requirements, academic policies, course offerings, and the university’s extensive resources. Students in a major will also receive supplemental advising from the chair of their major.

Core Faculty Advisors

In your first semester, you are assigned a core faculty advisor, who will work with you throughout your time at The New School to develop a coherent plan of study that enables you to attain your degree and positions you for what comes next. Core Faculty Advisors are instructors with a nuanced understanding of the curriculum, policies, and structures of the Adult Bachelor’s Program. They are the primary point of contact for students when thinking through your degree plan, courses for an upcoming semester, academic opportunities (e.g. a minor or Bachelor’s-Master’s pathway), and future goals. The philosophy of Core Faculty Advising is grounded in the following principles:

• Self-determination: Students have the freedom to control their individual educational pathways.
• Personalized and purposeful advising: We create an atmosphere that fosters an informed, purposeful education and experience tailored to students’ needs and goals.
• Ongoing support: Core Faculty Advising is an essential element of this program, supporting the development of informed citizens who see education as a critical part of their career path and lifelong growth.

You should meet with your Core Faculty Advisor at least once a semester; we recommend more frequent meetings as needed. Core Faculty advisors are available to meet with you in person and virtually.

Academic Advising and Student Success

Student Success advisors help ensure you are meeting your degree requirements and can direct you to academic resources, financial aid, student health services, and extracurricular programs, including internships and study abroad opportunities. Student Success academic advisors offer scheduled appointments or walk-in hours in which they respond to questions and concerns about students’ studies.

Adult Bachelor’s Program students should schedule an appointment with their academic advisor through Starfish, which can be found under the Academics tab of MyNewSchool.
