Transitioning to Microsoft Active Directory

Information Technology is in the process of planning and implementing the next phase of the migration away from our Novell environment. Along with the migration itself, we plan to enhance current services to benefit the community.

The transition from GroupWise to Google Apps was the first major phase to decommission Novell products from our infrastructure. The second major phase is to transition directory services from Novell eDirectory to Microsoft Active Directory (AD). Directory services support a variety of functions including computer and application authentication, printer management, network file storage and software application distribution. AD is an extensible and well-supported system that will lay a more robust foundation for integrations with other internal systems and hosted services. For example, we are currently designing the AD integration for the IP based telephone system (VoIP) to be implemented in University Center and eventually throughout campus. This integration will tie the individuals’ telephone extension data in Banner to the information in the directory you query when you use your telephone handset to look up individual extensions.

An enhancement that will occur in conjunction with the Novell to AD migration will be the replacement of “Novell-based” file storage. As part of this change, users will receive significantly more space in which to store files. We are currently in the process of evaluating the amount of storage we will be able to provide.

The timeline for the completion of migration to AD and availability of new file storage is scheduled to be completed by end of Summer 2013. IT will work to make the migration as non-invasive to New School users as possible. Because directory services are so integral to the working environment, there will be some changes, such as how computers access network printers, that we will explain as the project proceeds. Communications will be sent to affected individuals to provide details of these types of changes. These communications will be distributed via email, this web site, and other appropriate channels.
