Design-Build Project at Sunset Park Recreation Center and Collaborations with Poltrona Frau and Alpi Highlight School's Commitment to Sustainability and Civic Engagement

Students in Parsons' Design Workshop present their latest design-build project at the Sunset Park and Recreation Center in Brooklyn during NYCxDESIGN.

NEW YORK, May 9, 2015—The New School’s Parsons School of Design will present projects focused on sustainability and civic engagement during NYCxDESIGN, a citywide initiative celebrating New York City’s contributions to and leadership in design. The event takes place May 8-19.

The annual Parsons Festival (May 7-22) will once again be a part of NYCxDesign. Held at venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, including WantedDesign Brooklyn’s 15,000-square-foot showroom at Industry City, the event features an array of exhibitions, presentations, installations, workshops, symposia, gallery openings and performances that celebrate the next generation of artists and designers working in a range of disciplines.

The following is a selection of projects Parsons will present at NYCxDesign:

In this collaborative project between Design Workshop, Parsons’ innovative design-build initiative, and New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Parsons students designed and built new locker and changing room pavilions at the Sunset Park Recreation Center and Pool in Brooklyn. The pro bono initiative is part of a five-year partnership with NYC Parks to identify and implement improvements in public spaces across the city. Tours of the site will be given during NYCxDESIGN on May 16 and 17, 3-5 p.m.

In the fourth installment of Parsons’ collaboration with Poltrona Frau, students used scrap leather from the Italian luxury home furnishings company to create home furnishing concepts. Three students will be chosen as the winners of the exhibition and will travel to Tolentino, Italy over the summer to tour Poltrona Frau’s factory and further prototype their designs. In partnership with ALPI, the world leaderin the manufacturing of decorative wooden surfaces, students in Parsons’ Temporary Environments elective designed and fabricated a single, full-scale, interior environment using ALPI reconstituted wood veneer. Titled “Pansa/Panze,” the installation will serve as a trade booth for ALPI representatives during WantedDesign 2015, an international design event to be held in conjunction with NYCxDESIGN.
