The new Master’s in Global Affairs at The New School in NYC prepares you to work across boundaries by learning and applying a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing the world’s most pressing issues.

Unlike conventional international affairs degrees, the MA in Global Affairs treats global, environmental, and urban questions as inseparable. Bringing together urban affairs, environmental change, international affairs, technology, and design, the program gives you the tools to understand complex global challenges—and the practical skills to help design responses to them.

As part of a university that houses Parsons, the #1 design school in the United States, NSSR opens up pathways for interdisciplinary collaboration with world-class faculty and students from all across The New School. Global Affairs graduate students have access to multi-disciplinary learning opportunities by taking classes across the university, interning or becoming a research fellow at our innovative centers, institutes, and labs; and through forging partnerships and interning throughout New York City and the globe in diverse fields and organizations.

Our Approach

Throughout your course of study as a graduate student, you will learn to not only analyze systems, institutions, and power, but design new possibilities: to map problems, visualize futures, work with communities, prototype solutions, and communicate ideas in ways that can move governments, organizations, and societies to action.

Located in the heart of the global capital of international diplomacy, business, and social activism, Global Affairs graduate program is organized around interdisciplinary pathways — guided electives that let students become immersed on the critical issues that matter most to them, while building applied analytic skills and tools alongside subject area expertise in Technology, Design and Infrastructure, Global Inequality, Development and Social Change, Climate and Urban Futures, and Global Orders.

New York City offers opportunities for internships in diverse fields and organizations, allowing students to explore career options as well as integrate theory, policy, and practice through field-based learning in practicum projects. Through studios, community partnerships, and an optional intensive International Study Trip or UN Study (?) offered annually, students test their thinking in collaboration with institutions and stakeholders affecting change in the world today.

Career Opportunities/Outcomes

Graduates of this program emerge equipped to work with, and lead cross-sectoral teams, launch new initiatives, and design innovative, social justice-driven alternatives to existing global systems and structures:

  • International organizations — multilateral institutions that work on global governance, development, climate policy, and human rights.
  • Policy research and think tanks — institutes and policy centers conducting analysis on geopolitics, global political economy, and technology governance.
  • Nonprofits, NGOs, and advocacy — program management, strategic planning, and research roles addressing climate justice, migration, and global development.
  • Consulting and social impact firms – private sector companies that sit between government, civil society and business.
  • Government and the public sector — policy and strategy roles at the municipal, state, and federal level, especially in global cities like New York.
  • Technology and AI governance — tech policy, digital rights advocacy, and the social and political implications of emerging technologies — a fast-growing field the Phase II proposal specifically flags as a competitive differentiator.
