A Steinway piano in the Mannes School of Music

NEW YORK, September 5, 2023 – The Mannes School of Music at The New School’s College of Performing Arts is pleased to announce that it has been named an All-Steinway School in recognition of Mannes’s investment in the finest instruments for its piano students and ensembles. This prestigious designation will be celebrated at the Mannes Sounds Festival 25th Anniversary Concert: Mannes Goes All-Steinway Piano Celebration on September 20 at 7:30pm at The New School’s John L. Tishman Auditorium, featuring music for piano ensembles by Bernstein, Grant Still, Copland, Piazzolla, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Poulenc, Lavignac, Yoon, Smetana, Hailstork, Bolcom, Tower, Liebermann, Ravel, and A Bu/Carlos Pascual Cippeletti. This event is open to the public and free with registration.

The All-Steinway School designation is a testament to Mannes' dedication to excellence in musical education. Through the generosity of donors to the Mannes Sounds Festival, founded in 1999 by Professor Pavlina Dokovska, and the collaborative endeavors of the community, the Piano Fund of Mannes raised the necessary funds to achieve this important designation. The Mannes Sounds Festival - celebrating its 25th season - presents more than 20 concerts annually performed by Mannes' talented students and master classes and lectures by distinguished faculty members and renowned guest artists. The events are held at various prestigious New York City concert venues and cultural institutions.

Earlier this year, another fleet of Steinway pianos found its new home at Arnhold Hall, making the Mannes School of Music the only All-Steinway conservatory in New York. The partnership with Steinway & Sons, the world's leading manufacturer of pianos, was a pivotal moment as these exquisite instruments represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship and artistry, known for their incomparable sound and resonance.

Founded in 1916 by visionary musical pioneers David and Clara Mannes, the Mannes School of Music emerged with revolutionary ideas that redefined music education's purpose and methodology. Their primary objective was to cultivate a genuine love and passion for music among students. Over the years, Mannes School of Music evolved into a world-class college conservatory, earning acclaim for its commitment to artistic excellence and innovation. Today, as an integral part of The New School, Mannes is considered by many to be at the forefront of innovation as a classical conservatory.

“Mannes and Steinway go way back, all the way to our founders, David and Clara Mannes, and their close friendship with Frederick T. Steinway. When Mannes opened its doors in 1916, Steinway was the piano of choice. The relationship continued for many years, with Frederick T. Steinway’s son Fritz joining the Mannes board in the 1950s. Just as Clara Damrosch Mannes, a concert pianist, preferred Steinway pianos, we do so today and are very happy to be designated an All-Steinway School”, said Richard Kessler, Executive Dean of the College of Performing Arts and Dean of Mannes.

The Mannes School of Music invites music enthusiasts, supporters of the arts, and aspiring musicians to celebrate the Steinway designation at performances during its upcoming season, starting with the Mannes Sounds Festival 25th Anniversary Concert.

The vision of David and Clara Mannes is evergreen at the Mannes School, one built upon the belief that music is love and central to who we are as human beings.
