Light Me Up: Color Perception and Fidelity Preferences for Skin Complexion
A lighting designer considers a variety of lighting metrics, such as color temperature and CRI, to enhance spaces, but what about the people in them? My study looks at light hue, saturation, and color temperature to see how they affect the user's preferences and skin color appearance. Subtle variations of these metrics impact how users view themselves in front of mirrors and monitors. There is a limited number of studies on lighting for the fidelity of skin complexion. Inclusivity of skin complexions within these studies remains an issue. Lighting designers question which color temperature to specify for grooming applications, as the matter depends on user preferences. How can lighting designers specify light for spaces like bathrooms and cosmetic retail spaces with the individuality of the user in mind? This study explores preferences for different lighting scenes, considering variations in hue, the saturation of red light, and color temperature. My study aims to provide recommendations for lighting spaces where skin complexion is critical.
