    This Is Not a Body
My project is an interpretation of Magritte's The Light of Coincidences and is aimed at convincing viewers that the idea of beauty presented in modern media exists only as an illusion. The Light of Coincidences reflects the artist’s affection for his wife, Georgette, through realistic renderings of features like belly fat and wrinkles. I appreciated the way the artist sexualized the “ordinary” body. Inspired by Magritte’s depiction, I wanted to challenge standards of beauty in our society. I used the main elements of The Light of Coincidences —candles, shadows, and the silhouette of a woman's body—to re-create it through my own interpretation. The title of my piece was inspired by that of Magritte’s famous artwork This Is Not a Pipe .
