I use textiles as a means to illustrate three dimensionality. My project, titled Wandering Home, is a textile installation inspired by the lifestyles and old tales of a kind of mythical community of elderly wanderers who collect things as they travel and create their own art world using whatever they find around them. I'm inspired by these imaginary and romantic aging wanderers who live with the wisdom and open-mindedness that comes with age but free of the limitations of age. I begin by creating watercolor paintings as inspiration and creating color charts. I then develop naturally dyed fabrics for them and create laser-cut flower shapes that I sew onto the dyed ribbon and threads as a new type of embellishment. I then fashion woven and knit fabrics from these new ribbons and threads, which represent a kind of imitation of my paintings and result in textile illustrations. The fabrics are designed to cover tent structures made from joined bamboo structures or live on our body as garments. Additionally, I combine beading and lighting elements to illuminate “Wandering Home,” transforming the textiles into accessories for the garments. Whether the items are used as tent enclosures or as garments, they always celebrate the preference of my mythical elders to make full use of every resource surrounding them.
