My project is a series of four digital paintings that stand together as an abstracted autobiography and blur the lines between childhood and adulthood. During moments of struggle, there becomes a disconnect between the inner self and the adult world. Since adulthood is often associated with levelheaded thinking, an excess of emotion forces a defiance of that association and brings us back to experiencing moments of heightened emotion through the eyes of a child. The aim of this project is to disguise adult autobiographical subject matter within the chaos of vibrant colors, blocky shapes, and childlike details both to question what is childish and what is adult as well as allow for a viewer to observe highly personal artworks without being restricted or forced to overanalyze the content of each piece. Each digital painting is 2.5 x 5 feet long and contains two self-portraits. On the left side of each piece, a portrait is placed in the context of a life altering event, and adjacent on the right a portrait is placed depicting the effect of that moment one year succeeding. This colorful world was formed by a combination of cubist influence, synesthetic observation, and nostalgia.
