Who is She?

Who is She?
Inspired by abstract expressionist painters Franz Kline and Barnet Newman, I wanted to explore the concepts these painters employed — use of intense color, space, repetitive compositions, and linear designs — and how they might help me understand the multifaceted layers of my relationship with my grandmother, the oldest matriarch of my family. A stoic woman who survived a segregated America, she possesses a personality that is understandably a representation of her time. My collection brings together draping, textile manipulation, and textile design to express my personal interpretation of abstract expressionism and its ability to reflect the strength and rugged nature of a woman who motivates me to continue to fight adversity.
