Installation|Pipa (琵琶)
In my thesis project, I used a variety of media to represent space and convey emotion. For my final piece for the Space course, I created a mixed-material sculptural installation inspired by traditional Chinese culture, especially an ancient musical instrument, the pipa.
One of the four classical Chinese instruments, the pipa has a long history and a rich cultural heritage. I found the shape and structure of the pipa to be well worth exploring. Its streamlined silhouette, like a drop of water; the contrast between the long neck and the rounded body of the pipa; and the delicate carvings or lacquer paintings on the surface of the instrument—all these details give the pipa the appearance of both a musical instrument and a sculpture.
