  • Resisting Exclusions, Organizing against displacement in rapidly urbanizing Delhi

    Advising
Internal displacement caused by development has separated millions of Indians from their land, homes, culture and neighborhoods. Residents of urban squatter settlements are the most severely affected, as they are subject to sudden evictions without adequate resettlement. These patterns of spatial exclusions are most visibly manifested in Delhi, India's capital city. As urban governance shifts from managerial to entrepreneurial (profit-seeking), the role of government is deepening social exclusions in the public sphere. My research aims to analyze the forces of internal displacement in Delhi to identify the sociopolitical and spatial-political parameters that defy the Jhuggi Jhopris "right" to the city and identify the role of NGOs in advocating for this right. My aim is to present a manual that catalyzes the collective advocacy for the Jhuggi Jhopri Clusters. The manual documents their displacement through historical context, policy formations, and political organization. The manual satisfies three parameters: knowledge transfer, reflection, and collaboration. This strategy holistically builds the capacity and capability of NGOs by strengthening the collective awareness of action to reclaim Jhuggi Jhopris "right to the city."
