The direction for this project came from the desire to regain a deep connection with nature in an urban environment. Nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. If we can reintegrate into nature's order as participants, rather than invaders, we will see positive changes. Interground is a botanical garden promoting engagement with nature through an after-school kids' program and community gardens. The design aims to counter the loss of public spaces and revive the feeling of belonging for Nolita residents. These two programs will be nested in a botanical garden, a mother space designed to be an anchor, a space that will help residents claim their neighborhood as their own. To create an environment akin to a tree, a place that many species call home, I designed radiating paths that would be surrounded by natural elements of the botanical garden. Visual connections between the branches on each floor allow lights to shine on the floor below. Ramps connect different levels and provide uninterrupted, accessible navigation to all.
