New York is a revolving playground of surprises and mystery; there are hidden bars, restaurants, alleyways, secret gardens and parks. Inspired by such delightful characteristics of the city, The Portal is designed as an immersive experience, inviting guests to discover secrets and hidden elements as they journey through various spaces within the hotel.

The entrance to the hotel, located in the Flatiron District, is hidden on Madison Alley. Along the alley, there are retail stores, food stalls and a small park with a trickling waterfall. The simple, minimal look of the hotel entrance sparks instant curiosity among passersby and sets a dramatic tone for the startling discovery to come when guests step through the hotel door.

Heightening the overall sense of mystery is the sky lobby on the fourth floor. The layout creates natural circulation, encouraging guests to follow foot traffic around the hotel. Starting at the check-in area, guests follow a subtle path into the library, then to the bar lounge area in the back, where guests encounter the fireplace alcove hidden in a back corner.

The guest rooms are also designed to present a host of surprises. The monolithic wall closet creates a narrow entryway that opens up to the spacious bedroom, with floor-to-ceiling windows. In contrast to the dark wood finishes in the bedroom, the bathroom is wrapped with warm white marble to create a bright open space and a luxurious bathing experience.
