My thesis is a proposal for The WHIT Hotel, a structure based on The Whitney Museum. There are three buildings on the site, with the hotel being the landmarked building on West 12th Street in New York City. The site is an artist hub designed for numerous functions: It serves as a satellite host of fine arts festivals, facilitates arts community outreach with hotel guest immersion, and offers an artist-in-residency program with live-in studios. The WHIT’s main floor features a reception area, a bar and lounge overlooking the courtyard, and a grand main hall. The hall is the hotel’s focal space, including a round bar, a gallery exhibition space, a raised level for dining, a display kitchen, and a dining loft providing a breathtaking view of the entire hall. Artwork is exhibited in rotating and sliding displays. Each of the hotel's upper floors contains exhibition space alongside guest rooms with courtyard balconies. The WHIT Hotel reinterprets The Whitney Museum’s design language and vocabulary by adding new details. It offers artists a new way to live, create, and exhibit in New York’s Greenwich Village.
