My project aimed to create the “suburban experience” in the midst of the city. Based on studies of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Jacob House and Robie House, as well as Adolf Loos’s Müller House, my final project focuses on optimizing a combined lot for two middle-income families in Astoria, Queens (one family owns the combined lot, while the other rents the remainder of the space).
I focused on Astoria because it is a fitting location for a middle-aged couple with two children, given its demographics, architecture, and access to transportation. Combining lots creates a greater opportunity to employ Loos’s technique of the Raumplaun, the shifting of spaces in 3D, to provide a larger setting for the families and remove the need to have a second home as a vacation getaway.
