For the Starry-Eyed, For the Healers
I am a queer, neurodiverse Mexican-American interdisciplinary artist drawing inspiration from my identity to create tender, multisensorial, interactive environments. In creating this labor-intensive soft sculpture installation, I used sewing techniques to transform space, employing scale, color, embellishment, and humor. Inspired by everyday objects and urban ecology, my hand-sewn installation is an invitation to step into a fluffy, puffy, blissful world. For the Starry-Eyed, For the Healers explores interconnectivity, asking visitors to interact through touch and to rest by offering a large plush rock-like sculpture on which more than one person can comfortably lie down. Additionally, the entire soft sculpture ecosystem can be touched, with the instructions reading, “Sit on the rock. Listen to the rain. Touch any thing with the softness of a bee’s foot and the kindness of a ray of light.” My installation offers the possibility of pleasure in softness, beauty, and play.
