My senior thesis collection, 'claude,' is based on the exploration of identity as complex, multi-faceted entity that cannot be neatly categorized under societal labels. This collection was deeply influenced by the ideas of Claude Cahun, whose life and work epitomized the chameleonic possibilities of the self.
First, I took a grey linen coat as the basis for draping manipulations for each subsequent piece. Then, through cinching and anchoring parts of the garments to the body with the help of encased ties, I created loosely fitting silhouettes meant to evoke a sense of ambiguity between hidden and visible. From one look to another, the process of manipulating new appearances for the basic grey coat challenges the notion of identity being something stable, fixed or already prescribed by society.
