In my thesis proposal, I explore ways designers can employ adaptive reuse strategies to transform abandoned, obsolete industrial infrastructure into functional and environmentally responsible spaces. My proposal is a plan for turning the former Potomac River Generating Station (PRGS) Water Pump House, in Alexandria, Virginia, into an interactive science center, the Potomac River Water-Ways Science Center. In the center, children and families can play and explore while learning about natural and industrial water systems. The building design pays homage to our industrial past by keeping much of the original structure and water-pumping mechanics as a way of educating the community about industrial infrastructure. I also created displays on sustainable plumbing systems. The proposal consists of digital and poster presentations showcasing illustrations, drawings, sketches, and photo catalogs of the existing site and my adaptive reuse intervention.
