Avian Opera: Queering a Counterpoint of Silenced Voices at Lincoln Center
My work explores the intersection of humans and other species and environments by recontextualizing public space as the domestic space of birds. To do this, I propose a series of interventions centering on sound. These interventions programmatically ask the human observer to engage in a journey of queering space through the amplification of sound, absorption of sound, and intensive listening to sound in various sites around Lincoln Center. Additionally, I seek to facilitate a dialogue with the historical events that occurred on the site—in particular, the erasure of the San Juan Hill neighborhood in the mid-20th century that made possible the building of Lincoln Center. The representations challenge the viewer to adopt a variety of perspectives in experiencing a place. How can the relationship of humans to nature be fostered through systems that make visible the existence of other species in public space?
