What the Nose Knows: Memories and Narratives of Smell and Clothing
In an increasingly visual culture, the sense of smell is in danger of being forgotten. This thesis gives focus to the residue of smell in the everyday, dressed experience. Through narratives and memories collected using a mixed methodology of written responses and interviews, the research uncovers some of the personal and shared practices that form individual and collective identities and histories. Embedding smell in the material context of clothing brings smell beyond the fleshly surface to the dressed, sensory experience of being human.
