THE MACHINE

THE MACHINE

Motorcycles and intimacy are similar in significant ways. Both are associated with danger and fear while simultaneously encouraging freedom and forward movement. In this publication, I deconstruct the phenomenon of human intimacy by relating motorcycle parts and their functions to characteristics of intimacy—the engine and vulnerability, the ignition system and identity. The motorcycle sections consist of informational text and line drawings created on Adobe Illustrator. The intimacy sections consist of transcripts from interviews with close friends, found media, and photographs showing moments of closeness. These illustrations of intimacy mirror motorcycle mechanics and illuminate its workings.

The machine is a collection of working parts that collaborate to keep it functioning. Perhaps machinery is present in facets of life that we do not expect.
