    Synthiesis
Synthiesis exists at the intersection of materials innovation, design, and science. In developing this project, I envisioned a near-future world where living materials are used by designers to create "active objects"—products that are alive and require care. I first bioprinted a macroalgae, or seaweed, bioplastic onto a hemp textile matrix to create a novel composite. I then added microbes to the fabric to create a living textile. Used to create concept footwear, this item is part of a self-perpetuating system involving aeroponics and cyanobacteria. Active objects like this one could help us transition from human-centered attitudes to a life-centered outlook and from disrupting natural systems to partnering with them.
