Humberto Ochoa

Learning Outcomes is a collection of nine projects, each responding to one of the learning outcomes listed in the Thesis syllabus. I used the course structure as a creative framework, treating the academic goals as prompts. The project consists of nine responses:

1. To document my ideation process, I kept a diary of all events and interactions related to my thesis development.

2. To demonstrate my working methodology, I held a workshop in which peers re-created my responses to the learning outcomes.

3. To display historical awareness, I recreated Josef Müller-Brockmann’s Grid Systems in Graphic Design, replacing its contents with archival images from 1961, the year it was published.

4. To use the language of communication design, I designed a book consisting of excerpts from assigned texts transformed into instructional design prompts.

5. To demonstrate my presentation skills, I advertised my thesis on a digital billboard in Times Square.

6. To render type as image, I translated a written text into a series of images.

7. To demonstrate my typesetting skills, I deliberately typeset a text incorrectly.

8. To exhibit my grasp of typographic form, I created Laari, a typeface built entirely from cut-and-pasted fragments of Arial.

9. To critique the institutionalization of social justice, I built a website that breaks down and redefines every word of the CDC Anti-Racism Policy.

In Learning Outcomes, I used playful subversion to expose the ambiguity of academic language and the absurdity of quantifying creativity. Rather than rejecting structure, the project embraces the constraints of the course as opportunities for reinterpretation. By parodying the solemn tone of institutional directives, I reimagine them as fertile ground for experimentation and critique.
