In a series of original historical and contemporary case studies, the collection explores the way fashion and clothing influence articulations of body and self, experiences of time and place, and local and global relations.

Fashion and Materiality takes the reader from the study of an early modern “foreign dress” collection to a discussion of chinoiserie-style clothing in 18th-century Europe and fast fashion production in today’s China. The book also looks at the role of fashion in nation building, exploring the entanglements between fashion and migration involved in clothing donations for Syrian refugees in Germany and the emergence of “refugee chic” on international fashion runways.
